Brooks & Dunn er countryhistoriens mest suksessrike duo. Det er faktisk bare Simon & Garfunkel som kan konkurrere med disse to i antall solgte plater. I countryverdenen er ingen i nærheten. Siden debuten i 1991 har disse to kjekkasene vært enerådende i klassen duo.

Begge har en historie

Kix Brooks ble født i Shreveport, LA. Han var naboen til Johnny Horton, og sang sammen med legendens datter i 12 års alderen. Tidlig på 80-tallet satte han snuten mot Nashville.

Han ble en populær ”songwriter” og var ansatt i Tree Publishing i seks år. Låtene hans ble spilt inn av John Conlee, Sawyer Brown, Highway 101, Ricky van Sheldon og andre. Brooks gav ut et solo album i 1989.

Ronnie Dunn ble født i Coleman, Texas. Han vokste opp i et religiøst konservativt miljø, men passet nok ikke helt inn. Han jaktet berømmelse med spillejobber i klubber i Texas og Oklahoma.

I 1989 vant han en stor talentkonkurranse og ble etter hvert koblet til Tree, der Brooks allerede var en del av inventaret. De to møttes og sammen laget de en demo som sjefen i Arista Records likte. Resultatet ble debutplaten ”Brand New Man” som kom ut i 1991.

Rett til himmels

Suksessen lot ikke vente på seg. Fire singler fra albumet gikk til topps på countrylistene. Energien i musikken gjorde duoen til favoritter blant linedanserne.

Og Brooks & Dunn har virkelig greid det mesterstykket det er å holde seg på toppen i over 15 år. Bare en plate på disse årene ble en fiasko (”Tight Rope”, fra 1999). Platen førte til at de brukte over et år på den neste plata ”Steers and Stripes”. Det gjorde susen, og gutta var tilbake på toppen. Mange kritikere har hevdet at det er ”temmelig tynn suppe” som kommer fra disse karene nå, men det virker som om de har beholdt sitt drag på det amerikanske publikummet.

”Hillbilly Deluxe”, det nyeste albumet fra de to har allerede hatt en singel (”Play Something Country”) på toppen av Billboards ”hot country singles and tracks” liste.
