A parasite — Hypodermatinae — lays its eggs in the fur of the reindeer, and after a few days a larvae is born. The larvae penetrates the skin of the reindeer and lives of the reindeer's blood and other fluids. The parasites can be seen as bumps on the reindeer, like in this picture.
This herd is lying down in the bad weather. Their thick fur will protect them from the elements.
