You then call a cab to get out of this place You pull yourself shut inside but can never decide when to open it You approach each would-be destination and hesitate and say "Keep on drivin'." Sometimes you see a figure with an orange julius voice or universe-colored eyes but it's not them because you don't like the taste of oranges and you aren't fond of the universe. You don't know what flavor you'd like nor what vision you wish would fill your eyes -- maybe you'll know it when you see it -- but your track record for knowing things when you see them is... unproven.

Your fangs are coming in strong, you've been teething on chair legs, and you've been practicing your bite. You're a natural, but born out of adolescence, the time of life where I lay on the floor. For you the indecision is perpetual. As you ride in the various taxicabs, you can smell with your heightened sense of smell the chemicals left by the previous passengers-- that is, until you realize that you are the only passenger in this town and that smell is you. It isn't the most pleasant smell, although again, you don't know what kind of smell you would like to smell.

You always wonder what's up with the weather. At night, in the cab, you can never remember what the sky was like during the day -- but you know that if it had been cloudy, it was always cloudy and if it was sunny, it had always been sunny. At night, it's too dark to tell what's going on in the sky, and when the sky reaches down to the earth as rain -- well I guess it's too pathetic to notice. Or perhaps you are just distracted by your thoughts.

Pray hard in the cab. You can pray aloud, the cab drivers will never know. Not that they're deaf, bu that they're just like you, riding in their own cabs, and your prayers are the raindrops you send out of your cloudy self -- it's like they're the closest thing to God you believe in -- and they are distracted by their thoughts. Or perhaps your prayers are just too pathetic to notice.

Most nights as you ride the cab, you pass out from exhaustion at some point, and wake up in some new part of town -- except you've been in this town, having never made up your mind where you'd rather be, so long that it's all the same, and even on the off-chance they built a new subdivision, you know its formula already, it being so trivial.

Tonight is different for some reason. You stay awake until your watch runs out of batteries. Your prayers become intense and drawn out. For what must be hours, you breathe in and out, in through your nose, out through your mouth. You fiddle with the seats, looking with the faintest shade of curiosity for change, but you find none. What would you do with change if you found it, anyway?

You look out the window at the reasons that are supposed to get you out of the cab, the people -- with their strawberry daiquiri smiles and infinity-shaped limbs -- And shake and shudder within. You've made people your object of worship before, until you realized they were all like you, all formulas.

God set eternity in your heart, and now that you have it, you wish you had never been born. But you never were born. The entire universe began, ex nihilo, the day you turned 15. Never born, so you haven't even lived yet.

What's different about tonight is that you're finally awake to pound on the windows and cry your eyes out. You do this every night, in your sleep.

Make It (single) -- The I

The guys in The I, a Norwegian electronic/pop band, combine, in my experience, classiness and musicality. If you want to get in touch with their classy side, befriend them on myspace (http://myspace.com/theispace) and strike up some sort of conversation. If you're a band, they'll listen to your music, and if they like it, they'll let you know. To catch their musical side, again go to the myspace and take in the excellent Dead End Transmission EP in their playlist. That was my introduction to their music. In some ways it's better than the single I am about to review (for instance, there are more songs) and anyway you can hear it for free, so what's the risk?

When I heard The I had come out with a new single, Make It, I was a little excited. They said
they were going to be more experimental and do music no matter how small the outside interest (see their interview with the Palm Tree Gazette (http://palmtreesband.googlepages.com/interviews.html) so I was expecting something more experimental. When I asked about the price, I found out it was $7.50 for the single itself (which is reasonable enough, by Legit Band standards) but an additional $9 shipping, which is rather steep for 3 tracks. So full disclosure time: we made a deal whereby they paid shipping if I wrote a
review. I wouldn't have written a review otherwise, although I think my opinion would have been about the same.

So that's about their classy side. How about the music?

Track 1 is definitely the first track of something. Supposedly, this isn't going to go on an album. It would be a good opener. The production is pretty and sounds basically professional, not an outstanding improvement on Dead End Transmission.

I like The I's vocals. They remind me of Billy Corgan in that they do different things to
sound interesting. Furthermore Lars' voice has a certain accent and androgyny that are appealing. Or maybe something else is appealing.

The first time I listened I thought the synths at 2:10 sounded reassuring (whatever that means).

Though Track 2 is called the Neuromantik Remix of "Make It," it's really more
of a rearrangement, which is nice. I like it about as much as the first track, in it's own way. It's harder and darker. The lyrics are a little clearer, and with that I feel like they're missing some sci fi-ness.
Come on, The I, this could be your sell-out move, but keep a little sci-fi for old times' sake, can you? Or maybe it was there and I missed it, I can't say I understood all the lyrics. The first time I listened, I must confess I lost attention toward the end and checked some computer
thing (maybe I should have mentioned that I did nothing but listen up to that point).

Track 3 was a bit of a disappointment. To someone unfamiliar with a genre, everything can sound the same, but the initiated can distinguish the finer points, just as the shepherd will
know the sheep. So I must admit that "club" music is one of those genres I've never been able to approach as a conoisseur. A lot of the "club" ness of track 3 (especially the sound palette for the drums and bass) was really generic sounding. The beat wasn't bad, but it didn't
transcend the generic sound. The parts I liked best were toward the end
when The I used some of the sounds made familiar in Dead End Transmission, the crunchy synths as at 5:00, although I think put in a "club" remix they sound more generic than in a pop song, because in the "club" you see them in their native habitat. I do dig the fade out,
nice and minimalist.

Overall, it is okay to listen to. It's mastered loud (by early 90's standards, whence come most of my comparison CD's). The opening is a good opener and the closer ends well. Hey, for 14:30 it comes out to 2 minutes per dollar (without S&H). Oh yeah, the cover... theoretically they could send e-copies out to save on postage, but they preferred that I get the physical
packaging. It's adequate, but not super impressive. I mean, it holds the CD, has the information, and has that picture blazoned on the cover that you see on the MySpace, and of course it reveals the secret middle name of Terje Sparby (I won't spoil the surprise).

I haven't listened to "Make It" enough to give it a rating out of 10, but I can assure you it's somewhere above 6 out of 10 (5 being dead average). I have to see how it ages, you know?

Update: the first two tracks are 7's, and the last track is a 6. For comparison, "Head Over Heels" is a 6, "The Spine" is a 5, "Victorialand" and "Four Calendar Cafe" are 7's. Not the best reading music, "Loveless" (8) is better.

Make It review!

I <3 The I

I really do! These rocking futuristic nerds never seem to stop impressing me with their catchy space tunes. I received their latest release today..the "Make It" single. When Lars told me some time ago that they were going to do a remake of this already great sounding song I thougt: "Is it possible to make it even better??".



Eager to have a listen I put it on and layed back to let it all in. I kind of knew what to expect because I'd heard the song before but boy did it sound nice! Geat mix, smooth without being too slick. The soundscape is very futuristic. Dreamy with all the blooming synth sounds and energetic beats pushing it all forward with a little sci-fi icing on top. Closing my eyes I pictured myself being Michael J. Fox in "Back To The Future". Flying my "Hover Board" through town at night with the street lights flashing by like bullet beams.



What really makes "Make It" stand out is the vocals and really great lyrics. The feeling of "why didn't I come up with that!?" comes to mind. The vocals feel fun and I love how it feels like Lars is going into character, like I'm experiencing a great play or something. Very cool!



The "Make It" single also contains two remixes. The "Neuromantik mix" and the "Club mix". The "Neuromantik mix" is a very interesting take on the song. I really enjoyed the addition of electric guitars on this one. One word: Goosebumps! The "Club mix" is a straight out dance mix that makes you wanna shake your tailfeather. With the thumping beat you can't go wrong. Nicely done!



To answere my question further up.. YES! It's even better and cooler sounding than ever. The I have nicely polished an allready shining diamond. I'm impressed. I see great things to come for you my friends. Keep it up! You might even "make it" :)
